October 2009: Herndon Presents at International Internet Research Conference

Milwaukee, WI (October 9, 2009) - Keith Herndon, President of Atlanta-based Internet Decisions, LLC, presented a research paper at the 10th annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers held here by its host, the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.

Herndon's presentation, "Newspapers in the Mid-1990s: At a Crossroads with Online Media," explored how the newspaper industry confronted the emergence of the Internet as a consumer medium. The presentation focused on the operating practices of newspapers as they attempted to exploit online opportunities. It specifically focused on the case study of the New Century Network, the ill-fated project in 1995 to create an internet platform for the newspaper industry.

"Case studies play an important role in strategic planning engagements. Industry executives can glean valuable insights into current business challenges by studying the successes and failures associated with earlier business problems," explained Herndon. "In researching these case studies, it is very useful to do so within an academic framework."

Herndon's presentation was part of a multi-year doctoral research program in Internet Studies he has undertaken with the supervision of Matthew Allen, Ph.D., at the Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Australia. "It is exciting to be part of such a cutting edge program; one that embraces the Internet to bridge great distances in the teaching and learning process while at the same time engaging in the study of the medium itself," Herndon said.

"Keith's research is important for providing the 'long history' of newspapers and electronic information technologies," said Allen, in his blog at, adding that Herndon's own history in the newspaper industry adds an important personal perspective to his research.
